Our group has so many wonderful memories about the Romanian Festival that it is difficult to narrow them down to the one. The most important observation is that it was amazing and wonderful. We definitely will return again and again. It is disappointing that we did not know about this festival in the past years. We hope that the festival will continue to exist to remind Romanians of their heritage and their unique traditions so important and dear.
Our group included Dr. Anca Pacuraru, my husband Dr. Fred White, and me from Abilene, Tx, Mrs. Georgetta Pacuraru from Philadelphia. PA, and Mrs. Mihaela Hammond, Mr. Roy Hammond, and their son Matthew from Kingsland, Tx. Dr. Pacuraru and Mrs. Pacuraru are originally from Constanta and Bucuresti. Mrs. Hammond is originally from Tulcea. Our younger daughter Natalie was born in Tulcea County in 1989. Every year Fred, Natalie, and I return to Tulcea where we established a foundation called NOROC helping the abandoned and orphaned children in institutions in Tulcea County.
The following observations impressed us the most. It is difficult to write for fear that some important details will be omitted.
- It was amazing how many people from your church were working to make this event successful! Everyone was dedicated to making the day enjoyable for the guests.
- How much food was prepared! Everyone was cooking quickly to keep the crowds fed. I even noticed how many ovens and outdoor grills were in use.
- The food was delicious and authentic. The three “real” Romanians in our group were so pleased! A real taste of home. “Comfort food” as we say in this country.
- I really enjoyed talking to the people in traditional costumes and hearing about the origins of their clothing. Many of the pieces were made by grandmothers for their weddings. Priceless memories. The few little children in costumes were adorable.
- The dancers were well prepared and were a delight to watch. They brought back so many memories to Mrs. Pacuraru. The gymnasts were top quality and well trained. The boxers added to the male-interest.
- The lady who sang from out of state was another treat. She brought a sweet smile of memories to Mrs. Pacuraru. It was special that she was there to entertain with Romanian songs.
- Meeting the two priests and the ambassador was an honor. It was nice to talk to the people in the booths.
- An exchange student Oana Solca from Tulcea and I visited your church in 1993. I was so amazed to see all you have accomplishments and how your church has grown and changed.
All time and efforts of the people are so important to continue Romanian traditions and to teach future generations. These are priceless memories of home for so many people. You are keeping the Romanian culture alive to be admired and enjoyed by both Romanians and non-Romanians.
All in our group are eager to return next year for another delightful day “in Romania” and will encourage more people to join us. Our group departed at the end of the day with joy, singing the familiar songs. Our hearts belong to Romania.
